What is Authentic Assessment?

Here you go a couple of definitions:

Definition 1. Mueller (2016) defines authentic assessment as “A form of assessment in which students are asked to perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills.”

Definition 2. An evaluation process that involves multiple forms of performance measurement which reflect the student’s learning, achievement, motivation, and attitudes on instructionally-relevant activities.

How is Authentic Assessment similar to/different from Tradiditional Assessment?

Traditional

1. A school’s mission is to develop productive citizens.

2. To be a productive citizen, an individual must possess a certain body of knowledge and skills.

3. Therefore, schools must teach the body of knowledge and skills.

4. To determine if it is successful, the school must then test the students to see if they acquired the knowledge and skills.

Authentic

1. A school’s mission is to develop productive citizens.

2. To be a productive citizen, an individual must be capable of performing meaningful tasks in the real world.

3. Therefore, schools must help students become proficient at performing the tasks they will encounter.

4. To determine if it is successful, the school must then ask the students to perform meaningful tasks that replicate real-world challenges to see if they are capable of doing so.

1. Identify the standards

3. Identify the criteria for the task
4. Create the assessment tool

Example:

Text Retelling

Description: Students retell main ideas or selected details of experienced text through listening or reading.

Advantages: Students produce oral reports. They can be scored on content and language. Rubrics or rating scales can be used for scoring the task. It can determine reading comprehension, reading strategies and language development.
