  3. Placed among 7th avenue, 42nd street and Broadway, Times Square is maybe the most famous crossroads in the world. Appart of a touristic destination, Times Square is also a cultural centre in New York City. It´s the home of some of the most important American tv channels like MTV or ABC and the busiest theatre district in the world.

The most important event celebrated every year at Times Square is the New Year´s Eve. More than a celebration, it´s became a tradition with an estimated million people in the square and over a billion watching on tv all through the world. People there can enjoy musical performances, balloons, confeti and everything for a good new year´s eve party.

Appart from seing the place itself, there are many things to do around Times Square. You can visit some of the many theatres on Broadway, buy in many shops, or just take an organized walking tour to see everything. For dining you can visit the Restaurant Row, on 46th street, where you can enjoy cuisine from all over the world.

But Times Square is not a new thing. By 1928 over 264 shows were produced in 76 theatres there, and it was a crowded, full of life place. After the World War II, prostitution and sex theatres defined the area and it went into a decay for some time. It returned in the past two decades. The crowds came back and the place recovered it´s lost greatness.

  4. When we say "Times Square" we are talking about the cultural centre of New York, which also is, in fact, the most cultural city in United States, so we can imagine how important this intersection is.
The fact is that Times Square is the busiest theatre district in the world, and in this place we can also find the home of very important televison channels like ABC or MTV, and the Hard Rock Cafe and other restaurants, so the boredom has to be forbidden there.
But there have been changes in Times Square in the last century. For example, where we can find a kids theatre today, there was a sex theatre somes years before, and prostitution filled the place like the crowd does today.
Another interesting thing is the New Year's Eve, when people from the entire world celebrate the beginning of the year shouting the countdown together and watching how descends the New Year's Eve Ball.

  7. When someone talks us about New York, the dazzling neon lights of Times Square come immediately to our mind. There isn´t anyone in the world who doesn´t know the famous intersection among Broadway, 42nd Street and 7th Avenue. This popular crossroads is the centre of American culture, a lively place where people can enjoy watching performances, having a coffee in the Hard Rock Cafe or just admiring the urban planning. However, Times Square wasn´t always a place plenty of culture. There was a time when sex cinemas invaded the district. Fortunately, the police worked hard to recover the safety to the place.

We can´t talk about Times Square without mention Broadway, which is the oldest avenue in NYC. Even if this avenue is famous for its theatres and cinemas, only The Minskoff Theatre is located on Broadway.

  11. The first impression I have to see Times Square is that there, you could find represented all the world's cultures. Is it the symbol of power? It is too much information to be collected in a short spare time. I believe I would need rather than ten years to understand what happens in a single day. Everything is new for me, of course, it looks to be fantastic.
I wish I could visit it, walking from a street to another, listening to people, watching their faces, gestures, drinking some coffee from time to time… Are there poor people? I don’t think so. Poverty becomes music. Unemployment is just the product of sick minds. It's a lie. Come on! People living on the street are just observers. Everything is OK! ”Humanity not at its best or worst but at its most. This is the Times Square philosophy but, usually, most is best and is worst. Up to them. Well, if I have to visit it, I would like to celebrate the New Year’ festivity and see how the big ball drops. As far I understand, his descent to mark the new year is a tradition than has been maintained since 1907. On the other hand, I don’t have too much information about the History of the Times Square. In the nineteenth century the proprietor was John Scott an official under the command of George Washington- Things were different then. That field was dedicated to the cultivation and breeding of horses. In 1904 the New York Times newspaper moved its offices to this place. The rest was a history of cinemas, restaurants, tourists, entertainment, drugs, games, prostitution and occasional riots. By the way, do you have some information about Charles Becker? He was the first American police officer to receive the death penalty for murder. Most of his work was done on the streets surrounding Times Square. I invite you to know his particular history.

  13. I've never been to New York so I've learned lots of things about Times Square. I suppose bustling Gran Via in Madrid is a kind of reduced version since a number of important roads diverge there.
Although years ago they've to take away most of the neon signs and posters in movement, they keep a good representation like the neon "Tío Pepe" sign.
It's flanked by large department stores, retail shops, cinemas and fast food restaurants on every side.
On New Year's Eve thousands of people coming from all around the world gather in Puerta del Sol to count down to the chimes of the clock above Casa de Correos and eat a grape for every toll.
